Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long and extensive history for
supporting gynecological health. When it comes to pregnancy, labour, and post natal care, TCM treatments such as acupuncture, tuina massage, and acupressure offer hope. They are effective in treating/assisting with fertility, morning sickness, back pain, fatigue, labour, lactation, mastitis, and depression to name a few.

Pregnancy and TCM
The creation of new life is an amazing feat. It brings joy and anticipation, but it also uses an enormous amount of resources! Pregnancy relies on the Kidney system for many of those resources, as it is the organ which dominates reproduction in TCM. Other organ systems can experience strain such as the Stomach and Spleen resulting in digestive upset; the Liver and Gallbladder are busy at work with changes to connective tissues such as ligaments; the Heart and Lung have increased oxygen & circulatory demands. For these reasons and more, acupuncture and TCM care throughout pregnancy can offer a great deal of support and relief.
Acupuncture for Cervical Ripening and Labour Induction

During pregnancy, acupuncturists avoid some otherwise commonly used points. You may notice that points which were used regularly during your treatments before pregnancy are now replaced with alternative ones. The reason for this is that they have a strong downward energy which you want to avoid while carrying a baby.

However, as the due date approaches, it is exactly these points that are stimulated. Starting at approximately 36 weeks, these points can be safely used to help open the pelvis, ripen the cervix, and even help to turn a baby in breech position! When you come in for an acupuncture treatment, your licensed acupuncturist will also show you how to self-massage on appropriate points based on your specific diagnosis. Combined with perineal massage, these acupressure points will help during the labour process.
Self-stimulating Acupressure for Pain Relief in Labour
Once in labour, you and your birthing partner(s) can also use various points to relieve pain and stress. Learning and practicing in the weeks prior to labour is strongly recommended. Dr. Debra Betts (PHd) an expert on pregnancy & childbirth with over 30 years of experience, offers many useful resources to help make the birthing process a bit easier. Her step by step explanations with video guidance are worth checking out in the “Learn More” section below.
NOTE: These are general recommendations and may not be appropriate for everyone. A TCM assessment with a licensed practitioner is recommended for suggestions best suited to you as an individual. Consult with your physician or midwife.
